Life is full of decisions—some we celebrate, and others we wish we could take back. We often seek guidance for our next move, praying for open doors and opportunities. But what about the times when God closes a door? What if the stops in our lives are just as divinely orchestrated as the steps?

In today’s fast-paced world, where ambition and hustle are glorified, learning to discern God’s guidance forward and pause is more crucial than ever.

Jesus Guides Our Steps

Psalm 37:23 (NLT) says, “The Lord directs the steps of the godly. He delights in every detail of their lives.”

Jesus leads us on paths that align with our purpose. He plants dreams in our hearts and gives us the wisdom to pursue them. Whether we’re making a career move, starting a business, or choosing a life partner, He gives us direction.

Example:

Imagine you’re considering a new job offer. It looks perfect on paper—excellent salary, benefits, and prestige. But in prayer, you feel a check in your spirit. You can’t explain it, but something isn’t right. A few weeks later, you discover the company is undergoing massive layoffs. That “no” was a divine stop, saving you from unnecessary hardship.

Jesus Also Guides Our Stops

Proverbs 16:9 (NIV) says, “In their hearts, humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.”

While we love when God tells us to “go,” we struggle when He says “wait” or “stop.” However, His stops are not punishments—they are protection. We may not always see the danger ahead, but He does.

Example:

A relationship ends suddenly, and you’re heartbroken. You wonder why God allowed the pain. Months later, you realize that if you had stayed, you would have settled for less than what God had for you. That stop wasn’t rejection; it was redirection.

Learning to Discern the Steps and Stops

  • Spend time in God’s presence. Clarity comes in stillness, not chaos. (Psalm 46:10)
  • Listen for peace. If you feel uneasy, don’t ignore it. God often speaks through a lack of peace. (Colossians 3:15)
  • Seek wise counsel. God uses people to confirm His guidance. (Proverbs 11:14)
  • Be okay with “no.” Trust that God’s stops are setting you up for something better. (Romans 8:28)

A Prayer for the Week

Father, I trust You to guide my steps and my stops. Please help me to discern when to move forward and when to wait. Give me wisdom, patience, and faith to trust that Your plans for me are good. Even when I don’t understand, help me to rest in Your timing. Amen.
